Joy + Indie + Egg Eaters

Year of Kings. Day 202. Before Dark City Kings there was The Egg Eaters. It was strangely successful - on a label in Turkey (for real) and written up in a couple of publications. It was punk - but like early weird CBGBs punk of Blondie and Talking Heads, with a bunch of B52s thrown in. The Egg Eaters were a pop band - though most members would rather not admit it. This DCK song - DIVAs - our Devo-esque song for the Holy Crap Records compilation - is a return to pop songs. https://thedarkcitykings.bandcamp.com/track/divas.

This song also has a massive whistling solo by Craig and the best violin riff by Kyrie.

Year of Kings. Day 203. Why? Why do this? Because it brings us joy. That’s a photo of hanging out at practice grinning like our faces will break in two. Sure - we want to express ourselves - sure there’s a technical side and it’s always feels good to master a skill - but mainly because when we play music it brings us joy.

Year of Kings. Day 204. First round of posters were put up on Monday all around Asheville. I’ll hopefully get some up this weekend too. Thanks to Aunt Vicki and Fashion Bath for jumping on stage too with us. So - in all seriousness - there’s something happening in the Asheville indie music scene right now. People are writing great songs and putting on great shows. Take a chance - come along to this showcase - bring a friend - and I promise you - you won’t regret it.

Year of Kings. Day 205. Show 21. Actually Show 21 was last night at The Railyard. I’ve had a cold all week - and I missed the show. A small group of Dark City Kings moved us forward and rocked out the space - as usual!

Year of Kings. Day 205. Show 22. @millsriverbrewingco Mills River Brewing. Tonight. We’re gonna start up around 6:30pm and go until about 9:30pm - so yeah - we’re gonna go for it - in an inside acoustic manner. Looking forward to losing ourselves for three hours..

Year of Kings. Day 206. Mills River Brewing. The place was packed all night long. Great space and great crowd - and Santa was there too. It’s been a while since we’ve done a full three-hour show - so a bit of a marathon - but great to dig into our songs and not feel rushed and enjoy the moment.

Year of Kings. Day 207. Things are changing. 10 years ago there used to be one punk club and a handful of older venues like Grey Eagle and Jack-of-the-Wood. Now there are so many stages, so many venues. The economy is always terrible for musicians - but here you can almost make a run at it. Almost, you know, write some good songs and get yourself out there…
