Out to Sea
Year of Kings. Day 268. Thanks to Chris Tuller for sitting in with us. Thank to everyone for coming out - and thanks to the Railyard.
Year of Kings. Day 269. We decided not to pause. We played at the Orange Peel and recorded with Kevin Moloney - and we didn’t take a break. So we’re writing - hard and fast - casting our lines out to sea. I’ve been interested in Irish music but couldn’t figure it out - like drop d tuning - so I made up a simplified garage rock version of an Irish reel. I added some words and sent it over to Colleen. We made up a couple of versions and sat on it for a while - then we showed it to the band. Merlin said - you want it to sound like The Pogues? We played it last Sunday in practice, and then Merlin and Kyrie came along to Friday night’s show with guitar and fiddle parts. It was the best. We caught a fish!
Year of Kings. Day 270. Songs are made by everyone getting excited about a song - or one person getting very very excited about a song. So there’s one song - maybe the most pop song we’ve ever written - but I have a feeling about it and I can’t let it go. We practiced yesterday afternoon and we’re getting somewhere with the new batch of songs.
Year of Kings. Day 271. I say - and maybe this is true and maybe it isn’t - that Dark City Kings have good songs and we have Kyrie. Her violin elevates every song.
Year of Kings. Day 272. Happy Valentines. Be good to each other. Be good to everyone. We’re going to be playing at The Odditorium in Asheville tomorrow night. Start the weekend early. Don’t go into work on Friday.
Year of Kings. Day 273. Show 28. The Odditorium tonight. 8pm! (We’re playing third.)
Year of Kings. Day 274. Played at The Odditorium last night. Original punk venue of Asheville. Good to be back. First started playing here 9 years ago. Always loved the way punk clubs work, multiple bands on the bill, throw your equipment on stage, play a set, get off stage, next band…
Year of Kings. Day 275. This happened. Before we played at The Odditorium we set up a table and had stencils and paint and painted Dark City Kings on jackets and shirts. This was/is Merlin’s idea - but it’s great to bring art happenings into our world - and great way to meet people at our shows. Totally one of the most fun things that is happening in this Year of Kings.
