The Show of Shows

Year of Kings. Day 238. See you tonight at @the_orange_peel with @fashionbathasheville and @_aunt_vicki!!!! Can’t wait!!

Year of Kings. Day 239. Thanks to @swiftbennett for this photo from our show @the_orange_peel. Thanks to everyone who came out. Thanks to @_aunt_vicki and @fashionbathasheville for playing with us. Such great bands!

Year of Kings. Day 240. Usually I get off stage and take photos during a song - and that’s where we get a bunch of these photos. But I couldn’t do that on Thursday night - so we have a bunch of photos from music scene photographers. This is what makes the local scene real and true - when many people are intersecting with it, adding to it, having fun with it! Thank you @swiftbennett!

Year of Kings. Day 241. You know I watched a video of us playing - there’s me and Colleen on our 3/4 size acoustics, up-and-down on the beat…. and then, just below the surface, there’s Merlin stabbing at 8th notes, all down stroke, like a machine gun, giving the song the cool drive. For a moment we were smashing together all my favorite influences… country acoustic guitars, Kyrie’s mournful almost Irish fiddle, and then Merlin’s driving 8th notes like The Ramones or Joy Division. When it is working - it is working - Merlin heard something and added that guitar - and it worked.

Year of Kings. Day 242. Craig always wears a hat. Who knew he had this ravishing head of hair. He looked like Poseidon on the Orange Peel stage…. So how this works in the Year of Kings is that now we have all these amazing photos from the show so I will be sending them out to all the stages and breweries in WNC and use this to book more shows on bigger stages. I’m also going to create a list of small and medium size festivals in the southeast. The Year of Kings = 1) build on success, 2) be consistent, 3) be brave, 4) be lucky…

Year of Kings. Day 243. I can’t stand still on stage. My inspiration is Saxy Dave of The Dirty Badgers. He played saxophone in that band and was the band’s biggest fan too. He’d just loose his mind - enjoying the music more than anyone else. He was cool - but I jump around like an idiot because I’m trying to be like Saxy Dave and put down all pretensions and truly enjoy the music and the moment.
